Re: ⚽ West Ham v Southampton - Official Match Thread FT 0-3
Lucky to lose 3-0. Southampton played well and do look a decent side but we look awful at the moment. Yes we are bad at the back but we are much much worse going forward. Teams shouldnt have half as much ball at Soton did yesterday. You give teams that much possession at home in the premier league they will create chances. They had so much ball because when going forward we gave it back to them so easy, if we improve going forward we will have less work to do at the back.

Start at the back, our back 4 have continuity. It's a different back 4 each week and i lost track the amount of times Ogbonna and Reid pass it sideways to each other after looking forward and see no-one to pass to.

Our full backs yesterday were woeful in an attacking sense. Can't remember either Nord or Arbeloa looking to get in behind there opposite number or deliver a cross into the box. With the way Payet and Lanzini have a free roam to go more central and get on the ball the full backs last year were going into the space vacated and stretching the other teams defences which in turn gave Payet and Lanzini even more space to carve teams open on the smaller Upton Park pitch. Yesterday they have far more ground to try and get through and their defence was way more compact as they didnt have to worry about our full backs. On motd2 the heat map of Bertrand and Cedric was phenomenal, they offered so much more going forward and the potugese midget was one of the best players on the pitch.

Next up the midfield. Noble for me did ok on the ball, he didnt have to many options but he wasn't the worst out there by a mile. Kouyate was terrible, that's one of the worst games he has had for us. He tried his heart out but on the ball he failed to do anything on the ball and lost it too easily for their second goal. Him and Noble as a pairing isnt working at the minute and at home they dont look like they can use the ball quick enough to affect teams.

The three infront are the most worrying, that was the worst i've seen Payet play and Lanzini didnt seem interested in getting in the pockets behind their midfield 3 and doing some damage. None of them seemed to wanted to come get the ball into feet, none of them had any interest in running back and doing some defending. They didn't press the Soton back 4 and there was no buzz when we did finally get the ball. This for me is the biggest problem as the difference it will make when fixed will be the thing that can turn our fortunes around. You need your attacking players to be playing well in this league if you are going to win matches and at the moment they arent.

Finally Zaza, I thought Valencia to Everton for £14M was daylight robbery but Juve must be laughing at getting £20M for him. No touch, no pressing, no shots, no intelligent runs. The guy is pants, Fletcher or Martinez to come in please and get Sakho back asap.

Bilic also is making some worrying decisions, I dont get Nord at RB instead of Byram and then i dont get moving Antonio there in the second half instead of bringing Byram on. Antonios body language when moving over to RB stunk aswell.....it werent the actions of a player who is behind his manager. Boro at home he has to get something then he has a international break to work with the squad then at Palace lose and it could be bye bye Slav.

Russ - Yeah, we seemed to have two major issues last season, starting games very slowly and conceding goals.

To a certain extent our goalscoring and chance creation covered up some of those issues (although to be fair, lots of discussion on WHO took place as to why they were happening).

This season we STILL have those issues, they are even worse, and we can't score! Not great.

How typical West Ham it would be to move to a new stadium, get loads of new season ticket holders and talk of Champions League.......and the immediately get relegated.

We got 12 points over our last 8 games of last season, 3 wins 3 draws and two defeats. Over those games we both scored and conceded 19 goals. So clearly the rot had set in back then.

"You can't play a defensive midfielder at right back, when you have a right back on the bench. Bertrand got round the back everytime because Havard didn't have a fucking clue in terms of positional play, it didn't help that Antonio seemed to forget he also has to track back."

Spot on. But sadly that is only one of many major issues.

Yeah, I'll give you that. But we weren't defending properly as a team or individually and started shipping goals, as you say. So for that's when it all started.

I think the point I am making is that the defensive frailties haven't just appeared this season. So what happened for that to change.

Bilic has to find the answer.

But yeah you are spot on about chances. We wouldn't have scored if we were still playing till midnight. It was utterly depressing.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Southampton - Official Match Thread FT 0-3
Was sat in my seat at half time just staring blankly into space trying to work out what could be done to change what I had just witnessed, I gave up after about 10 minutes as there is so much wrong at the moment that it is a major job to try and repair the current damage.

You can't play a defensive midfielder at right back, when you have a right back on the bench. Bertrand got round the back everytime because Havard didn't have a fucking clue in terms of positional play, it didn't help that Antonio seemed to forget he also has to track back.

We were devastating on the break last season, we have lost that pace going forward, we started the game yesterday looking like we were playing for a 0-0, they had the ball in their half and there wasn't a player within 20 yards of them!

Whether Adrian kept us in it or not yesterday, 11 goals shipped in 3 games, Randolph should be given a run now. Harsh but whole teams needs a shake up.

"We lack a Kevin Nolan type that brings the group together" Spot on. Kevin Nolan might not be the greatest footballer but BFS had him as the manager in the dressing room. He picked up dissent and problems before they grew and held the team together

Russ - Im not sure thats true. We were conceding goals but we were creating chances galore.....should really have won the last four games.

At the moment, we don't seem able to create a single decent chance.

Bilic recently said how the most important players in any successful clun are the locals, or at least nationals, who understand the passion and the need to fight.

We really miss Cresswell, Carrol and Tomkins to go with Noble, especially at times like this.

No one said last half of the season. It was last two months or approx. eight games. We were playing like we have played this season.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Southampton - Official Match Thread FT 0-3
Master: All of them were undisciplined yesterday. Going flying in when didn't need to. And then not committing to a tackle when they needed to.

Payet and Lanzini just looked like they'd said fuck doing any tracking back. And because of that our whole defensive shape is a mess and Soton were just moving the ball through us like a hot knife through butter. Noble and Kouyate looked like lost sheep.

And as for Reid. Why has this geezer suddenly started looking a League on defender?? He's a fucking mess. Compare him to Fonte or Van Dijk yesterday. They were hard as nails, great in the air and looked composed and organised. He looks like a rugby player told to go and play football. Fucking joke. We break up their play and he suddenly finds himself up the field chasing their full back into his own corner with others in support.... I'm going "Don't foul him, don't foul him" and what's he do? Jumps on his back like a Lagos whore and gives a foul away.

School-boy shit. Was so depressing to watch.

Bilic needs to get this mess sorted because if Boro beat us then I think the owners will have no choice but to get someone in to fight the fire.

As I said before, such a shame.

Most worrying for me is tbis team has no fight, could not give a shit about the club and will take us down no doubt.
The only ones who care and get it are Noble, Carrol who is rarely fit and er..............Tomkins.

I hate picking out individuals, but I too think Kouyate has been flattering to deceive lately. Looks good when he stretches his legs with the ball, but so often has no idea what to do with the ball, and more often than not loses possession.

Let's quash this last half of last season nonsense. Thirty two points second half of last season compared to twenty nine first half. Nine points from our last five games too, a striking rate which over the season would have given us some sixty six instead of our final sixty two points.

Time to drop 2 of the 3 we carry (lanzini, payet and I'm sorry to say but Antonio too if he can't be arsed to track back). Only one should start with all others defensive minded. Kouyate can do some bench warming too, undisciplined idiot.

Russ I think you bang on about the rot starting last season and the most worrying thing is the club either through incompetence or over confidence chose to not to address it over the summer, with the predictable outcome that our opposition haven't overlooked it and have been free to exploit it.

Adrian comes out with alot of credit for avoiding utter humiliation. You could say he helped with progress of only letting in 3 instead of 4. That's how depressing yesterday was.

Think Kouyate has been appalling this season, a real liability.

Nordvedt and Arbeloa aren't even Championship standard full-backs.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Southampton - Official Match Thread FT 0-3
All of our problems were desperately laid to bear yesterday and even someone who has no clue about football could've quite easily seen this.

Yesterday, in our opponents, we had a team that, once again, in the summer sold there best players (bar one in Bertrand). They have no superstars and they have had a pretty slow start to the season.

They turn up yesterday and despite an easy victory didn't actually play particularly well. What they did do was the basics very well. And that was enough to comfortably beat us. They were organised, solid, moved the ball quickly, created space and when got chances finished them. But those qualities are the very basic qualities you should expect from any top level pro team. That is what you should be getting as a minimum. The teams that are successful do that and have players on board that can then do more and even the extraordinary. Yesterday Soton turned up and did the minimum; albeit very well.

And yet that was enough to roll us over easily.

Our performance for me was the worst of the season so far. By a mile. Once again our defenders struggled to defend and we didn't defend as a whole team. Our midfield kept getting by-passed by Soton too easily. When we had the ball we looked lazy and, in fact, when we never had the ball we looked lazy. There was no bite, no steel and no creativity. Up front just toothless. Utterly toothless.

There first goal was a joke. Antonio just staring at Bertrand and then blink of an eye he's ten yards past Antonio and the ball slotted through to him. So basic it's just unreal.

Noble plenty of time on the ball because Soton allowed him time as they knew we wouldn't score. No options. Lanzini and Payet just jogging about and not giving Noble any offers of an outlet. Was just pedestrian and depressing.

I look though the team and I could say Ogbonna battled and did ok. But I can't really go further than that. Noble tried his best but was getting beaten for pace and by-passed and had absolutely no options whatsoever when he had the ball. Zaza battled but is not really that good. Just a complete and utter shambles of a performance.

Based on yesterday we are going down. Because if you can't even compete or even get close to an ordinary Soton side just doing basics properly then you won't win a game all season.

And, being honest, this hasn't just started this season. For the last two months of last season we were poor and it saw us slip from a point behind Citeh in fifth to scraping into the Europa qualifiers in seventh. That slide hasn't stopped and we played poorly in pre-season and have played poorly all season. And it's not just about being beaten by great teams and wonder goals. Yesterday showed actually how low we have slid and how poor we actually are.

And the most worrying thing. Bilic looks like a rabbit lost in the woods. JUst looks utterly drained and devoid of any solutions.

Such a shame.

Coffee

That's what I thought. It seemed we were a bit more conservative in attack, which seemed to make us a bit harder to break down. To be fair, Saints looked more dangerous than us for the first half, the few times they attacked, but we were dealing with them. All that time, though, despite all the possession, we didn't look dangerous at all.

Boots,

I was stunned to hear on the commentary yesterday that we don't train on the pitch as we only have access on match days.

Now that might have been obvious to those who have taken more interest than me, but if true that is daft. Sheer daft.
